Electrical Engineer
Design PCBAs for battery management, motor control, power distribution, and flight compute — for products flying today.
About the role
OpenPPG is an innovative company specializing in electric paramotors and other upcoming electric ultralight aircraft, committed to advancing aviation with lightweight, efficient, and affordable flight solutions for the everyday man. Our products, such as the SP140 electric paramotor, enable accessible powered paragliding for enthusiasts worldwide. The Electrical Engineer will design and test critical hardware components for our electric paramotors and ultralight aircraft, including compute boards, sensing electronics, power distribution boards, battery management systems, motor controllers, and flight control systems. This role is based in Canfield, OH but is flexible to remote work and is open to engineers at all levels with a passion for aerospace innovation and electric propulsion.
What you'll do
- Develop conceptual designs and conduct trade studies to support key design decisions for electric aircraft components.
- Design and validate PCBAs for critical systems in electric paramotors and ultralight aircraft, such as battery management systems, motor controllers, power distribution boards, sensing boards, or flight compute modules.
- Support the review of design artifacts (schematics, layouts, bills of materials) from peers or external suppliers.
- Contribute to system integration and test activities, including test execution, debugging, and optimization for flight performance and safety.
Required qualifications
- Bachelor's or graduate degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field / equivalent experience (degree not required).
- 2+ years of industry experience in electrical design.
- Solid electrical engineering fundamentals with hands-on experience designing, building, and testing PCBAs.
- Proficiency in Altium or KiCad for schematics and layout.
- Master debugging skills for hardware issues, with the ability to document problems and implement solutions efficiently.
Preferred qualifications
Not a checklist — we're looking for strong candidates, not perfect ones.
- Experience with sensing electronics or flight control systems.
- Design of high-speed boards (USB, Ethernet, sensor interfaces) integrated with high-current power supplies for propulsion systems.
- Knowledge of signal integrity and mitigation techniques in lightweight, vibration-prone environments.
- Experience with compact boards (HDI, flex, rigid-flex) suitable for ultralight aircraft.
- Proficiency in LTspice, Python, and MATLAB.
- Embedded programming experience with DSPs, microcontrollers, and FPGAs, particularly for real-time flight applications.
